So, on Thursday, this board goes away. I've been here for the past 18 months, just a month or so short of the board's creation. I'd like to use this thread to fondly remember good threads.

The Aquaman discussions.
Before the Aquaman Archive was annonced last summer, there were 3, 4, maybe 5 threads that were discussing how Aquaman should be Archived and the series in general. These threads were the ones that led to the mapping phenomenon. We had a number of viewpoints that were passionately defended. The Golden Age, the start of the fradon run, the 1958 origin, and Showcase were all proposed as starting points, and a few others besides. As we later learned, the Archive editors had been reading our debates, and decided the 1958 origin made the most sense. We got our book, and I'm just a little bit proud to have helped out during the birthing. Even if I didn't know it at the time.

Anyone else want to contribute to the wake?

In general, I think that politics should take a back seat in places like this.

But we do live in the real world, and on those (rightfully) infrequent times when political discussions get going here, I participate with enthusiasm, as do a number of others of various political stripes.
I'm really glad, for instance, that we had that long, extremely civil and informative discussion of the Iraq War over several weeks. The people here, not least those I disagreed with the most, are smart, well informed, and articulate. I got the impression that even if my arguments didn't change anyone else's position, they were being listened to, and that's what political discussion in a democracy is all about.

Who are all these people wandering around in pajammas, nightshirts, and baby doll nightgowns?

This is the strangest Wake I've ever been to.

I can't even see the corpse.

Hic!

Pour me another please m'dear.

It was a wonderful original thread over at the JSA, before we had our own board and I met many fine people through that thread. When it was finally shut down, I feel our finest hour was moving wholesale and claiming squatter's rights on the Legends of the DC Universe board. Rob finally noticed us there and stole our threads from those new roomy digs, but we kept on posting. Somebody realized it made sense to give us a board and Rob renamed the Legends board for us. For such a long time after the renaming the URL was still clearly the Legends board, and I would always smile in remembrance when I noticed it.

Bottoms up!

Just out of curiosity, how long does someone have to be on this board before he/she is a full member?? I've only been on this board for a year, not as long as you guys, but heck, a year!! As of my last post, this board was still identifying me as "new member" !! Hope to follow interesting discussions on the other board. See you guys there !! cheers Will

Unbelievable! Just reading this thread so far has left me with a tinge of sadness. This is really a great place, and a wonderful comfort zone. I have to confess I don't like the new message board. I'll take this one, even without an edit function!

Thanks for reminding me of the takeover of the Legends boards, Scott. Wasn't that great?

To me the great thing about this board was simply soaking in all the great information about the history of DC comics. And there's just way too many threads that I can hearken back to.

It makes me laugh to think back on what seemed to be an every 6-month cycle where someone would innocently start talking about the virtues of Marvel's Essentials series, and how it would be oh so nice to have DC try and do something similar for all the people who can't afford the Archives. Those threads got pretty....creative!

Ah, yes. That infamous thread hi-jacking. Steven Utley's counter-culture tactics worked quite effectively. I was a tad embarrassed to be associated with that sort of ole time "campus sit-in," but it did lead to this fine archives thread. I'll certainly miss it. I'm still not particularly thrilled with the new boards. It's not as bad as I was afraid of, but the advertising at the top looks rather junky, and I'm not sure how to utilize quotes. But, I'll go along with it, I suppose.

Hey Will,
I never paid much attention, but have seen mention that the Newbie status disappears after a certain number of posts. You should try posting a couple more times and see if you can morph into a grizzled veteran before the final oblivion.

Always helpful. Another charm of this board.

Will, you need 30 posts to graduate to "Member". You have only 23.

Ah, the Essentials Wars. I lost a toe in one of the bloodier battles. There I was, armed with only a keyboard and my wits (insert crack about being disarmed here) trying to fend off a horde of Essentialers. They fought like dogs, day after day, coming at me in waves. But I wouldn't give ground, nope, not a bit. Finally had some relief when the 3rd Batallion came over the hill.

Them damn Esses naver quite gave up though. Ever so often, one of will poke his head over the top his monitor and take another shot.

That toe still hurts.

One of the coolest threads was when Bob Greenberger jumped on to ASK US FOR *OUR* OPINION on the next LSH archive (vol 12) - should the Karate Kid issues be included or not.

That was the start of his regular and very much appreciated appearances. Sadly someone seemed to have pulled the hook on his participation rather abruptly as he stopped suddenly a few months later.

It was so cool to read calm, informative, professional responses to our questions from the guy who makes a lot (all?) of the decisions on our favourite reading material. It was a shame to see that end.

Thanks you and good night,

I wasn't on this board for that long. But when I was, I had to marvel at the level of knowledge folks here posessed. And how the civil the discourse was the majority of the time. Well done.

I hope the new boards can live up to what was accomplished here.

I liked the speculative threads - what characters logically deserved to be archived sooner than others and in what order.

The things you find out about a person at a wake! I was aware of this forum's early beginnings on the JSA board, but I completely missed the Legends of the DCU chapter in its young life.

So you mean all this time I coulda been posting about my favourite Legends story arcs? Oh the missed opportunities!

Shouldn't Michael Zulli be drawing these posts for us?

By the way, where is our pal, "Utley of the Apes?" Haven't seen any of his postings lately, and certainly not on the other boards. Hope he's doing well. Besides contributing many interesting and insightful postings, he's also a grand fellow.

We may never know. Could be this one.

Or maybe the Rob & Co. have bigger fish to fry and this board stays up 'til next week.
